DNA Biotechnology: New Equipment for SME Biology Labs
Tom Heintz, Beth Hunt, Nikki Bauer
- $6,948 — Give students real-world lab experiences that duplicate work conducted in research and forensic laboratories as they learn about biotechnology and molecular genetics.
- This grant will fund the purchase of a microcentrifuge, digital micropiplets, forensic DNA kits and other equipment and supplies
- New labs made possible with this equipment include restriction enzyme digest of DNA, DNA fingerprinting, bacterial transformation, and gel electrophoresis protocols.
The lab equipment and supplies purchased with this grant money will give our students in Biology 1H, Biology 2 AP, and Biology 2 IB real world, hands-on experiences in biotechnology. More than 200 students per year are expected to benefit. Such equipment is currently available at the Biotechnology Signature Program at SM West, but is not budgeted for SME. Enhanced lab experiences using this equipment will also assist AP and IB students in meeting the specialized requirements of those programs.
