The East Fund relies on many volunteers for a variety of jobs. Some leadership positions are slated by the Nominating Committee. One East Fund Volunteer’s Perspective

As a writer for The East Fund section of the SME newsletter, I have seen how the East Fund makes learning more meaningful—and fun! Last spring, I was lucky enough to visit Kelly Fast’s sophomore English class and watch students work with professional actors from the Kansas City Repertory Theatre to stage Othello. This project, which was made possible by an East Fund grant, brought Shakespeare's play to life as kids produced their own adaptations and performed scenes. I have talked to history, math, and physics teachers about technology that the East Fund has provided to aid their instruction. I also attended the opening of the new coffee shop at East and was impressed by the collaborative effort that made this enterprise possible, with some financial aid from the East Fund. Watching our talented SME students and teachers in action is a privilege that I get to share when I write about these experiences for the newsletter. I have been volunteering in my daughters' schools for years, but this volunteer job is the most enjoyable and rewarding that I have ever had. — Henrietta Rix Wood

East Fund Volunteer Opportunities

The East Fund has many important and exciting projects that need volunteers to make them run. These opportunities vary from a one-time, two-hour commitment to working on an ongoing committee. Whether you have just a little time or are looking for something rewarding to really get involved with, we are the place for you!

Your time is one of the most precious things you can give. The East Fund is just as much about community involvement as it is about money. When communities are involved in schools, the schools thrive. The East Fund would like to encourage your involvement in education at our school. There are big jobs and small jobs:

Help evaluate the effectiveness of grants (Post-Grant Evaluation Committee).
Help decide which grants are funded by serving on the Grant Committee.
Get together with faculty or staff and submit a grant request that will benefit students at SME.
Help with our Communications Committee by writing articles, taking photos, designing printed items, or working on our Web site.
Help involve our alumni in giving back to the school.
Help with the Feast for East.
Help with mailings and computer data entry.

Committee Chairs

Development - Barb Haviland, Chair – Responsible for all fund raising efforts.
Feast for East - Pam Olander & Melissa Anthony, Co-Chairs - Responsible for all aspects of Feast for East.
Post-Grant Evaluation / Community Priorities - Kent Peterson, Chair – Responsible for connecting with community to determine priorities, assess needs and make general recommendations for focus of investments.
Communications/PR - Debra Collins, Chair– Responsible for communicating with community.
Volunteer Management - Elizabeth Mayfield, Chair – Responsible for recruiting volunteers and managing volunteer program.
Administration — Trish Burkhead & Vicki Luby, Co-Chairs – Responsible for coordinating administrative tasks.
Grant Committee - Connie Patton, Chair – Responsible for developing assessment methods for grants, for evaluating grants, for making funding recommendations to Board, and for following up on outcomes of funded grants.
Partnerships - Andy Morrison, Chair – Responsible for exploring opportunities for partnerships with businesses, organizations and individuals to increase the capacity of The East Fund.
Nominating - Pam Olander, Vicky Luby & Melissa Anthony – Responsible for presenting a slate of officers/board members and committee chairs for the coming year.

Note: The Community Priorities Committee conducts its work on a five-year cycle; the chairmanship is determined when the committee convenes.
